The Importance of Wudu

Before a Muslim can perform Salah (prayer) or touch the Arabic text of the Holy Quran, they must be in a state of physical and spiritual purity. This is achieved through Wudu (ablution). In this tutorial, we will cover the basic steps of performing Wudu correctly.

Step 1: Intention and Bismillah

Begin by making the intention (Niyyah) in your heart that you are performing Wudu to purify yourself for worship. Then, say "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah) before turning on the water.

Step 2: Washing the Hands and Mouth

Wash both hands up to the wrists three times, making sure water reaches between the fingers. Next, take water into your mouth with your right hand, rinse it thoroughly, and spit it out. Repeat this three times.

Step 3: Sniffing Water and Washing the Face

Sniff water gently into your nostrils using your right hand, and blow it out using your left hand. Do this three times. Then, wash your entire face three times, from the hairline to the chin, and from ear to ear.

Step 4: Arms, Head, and Feet

Wash your right arm up to and including the elbow three times, followed by the left arm. Next, wet your hands and wipe them over your entire head once (Masah), and wipe the inside and back of your ears. Finally, wash your right foot up to and including the ankle three times, ensuring water reaches between the toes, followed by the left foot.
