Hydration as an Act of Worship
Islam teaches us that every permissible daily action can be transformed into an act of worship if done with the right intention and according to the Sunnah (way of the Prophet). Drinking water is no exception.
Sit Down to Drink
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) strongly discouraged drinking water while standing. He said, "None of you should drink while standing." (Sahih Muslim). Medical science now suggests that drinking while sitting allows the fluid to flow more slowly, easing the filtration process for the kidneys.
Drink in Three Breaths
Another beautiful Sunnah is to drink in three separate breaths rather than gulping the entire glass at once. The Prophet (PBUH) would take a sip, remove the vessel from his mouth to breathe, and then take another sip. He stated that this method is "more thirst-quenching, healthier, and more wholesome."
Bismillah and Alhamdulillah
Always begin by saying "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah) and conclude by saying "Alhamdulillah" (All praise is due to Allah) after you are finished. This cultivates a constant state of gratitude for one of the most basic but essential blessings of life.
