How to Perform Sajdah Tilawat (Prostration of Recitation)

What is Sajdah Tilawat?

There are 14 (or 15, depending on the Madhab) specific verses in the Holy Quran where Allah commands prostration or mentions those who prostrate. When a Muslim recites or intentionally listens to one of these verses, it becomes highly recommended (Sunnah Muakkadah) or obligatory (Wajib, in the Hanafi school) to perform a Sajdah Tilawat (Prostration of Recitation).

Conditions for the Sajdah

Because it is an act of worship resembling Salah, the conditions for Sajdah Tilawat are the same as prayer:
- You must be in a state of Wudu.
- You must face the Qiblah.
- Your Awrah (modesty) must be covered.

Step-by-Step Method

If you are reading outside of Salah:
1. Stand facing the Qiblah (standing is preferred but sitting is allowed).
2. Say "Allahu Akbar" without raising your hands.
3. Go directly down into a single prostration (Sajdah).
4. Recite "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" three times.
5. Say "Allahu Akbar" and raise your head. There is no Tashahhud or Salam required at the end.
