When is Tayammum Allowed?

Islam is a religion of ease. When water is completely unavailable, or if using water would cause harm or severe illness, Allah has provided an alternative method for purification: Tayammum (dry ablution) using clean earth, dust, or stone.

Step 1: The Intention

As with all acts of worship, begin with a sincere intention (Niyyah) in your heart to perform Tayammum to make yourself permissible to pray. Say "Bismillah".

Step 2: Striking the Earth

Place both hands flat on the clean earth (or a clean stone/dusty surface). Strike it gently once. If there is excess dust on your hands, you may blow it off lightly or tap your hands together to shake off the excess.

Step 3: Wiping the Face and Hands

Wipe your entire face with your hands, just as you would during Wudu. Then, strike the earth a second time. Use your left hand to wipe your right arm up to the elbow, and use your right hand to wipe your left arm up to the elbow. Your Tayammum is now complete!
