Introduction to 'Kha' (خ)

The Arabic language contains several unique letters that do not have direct equivalents in English. One such letter is Kha (خ). Pronouncing it incorrectly can change the entire meaning of a Quranic word. In this free tutorial, we will walk you through exactly how to produce this sound.

Step 1: Finding the Articulation Point (Makhraj)

The letter 'Kha' originates from the top of the throat (Adnal-Halq), which is the part of the throat closest to the mouth. To find this spot, think of the sound you make when clearing your throat gently, or the sound of light snoring. It is a raspy, friction-based sound.

Step 2: Tongue Placement

Keep your tongue relaxed. The back of your tongue should raise slightly towards the soft palate (the squishy part at the roof of the back of your mouth). As you push air out, the friction between the back of your tongue and the soft palate creates the 'Kha' sound.

Step 3: Practice Words

Try saying these words slowly: Khair (Good), Khaalid (Eternal), and Khawf (Fear). Record yourself and listen closely to ensure you are getting that distinct, raspy quality without making it sound like a hard 'K' or a soft 'H'.
