What is Sarf?
In traditional Arabic studies, the language is divided into two main sciences: Nahw (Grammar/Syntax) and Sarf (Morphology). While Nahw deals with how words change at their endings depending on their position in a sentence, Sarf deals with the internal structure of the word itself. It is often described as the "mother of the sciences" in Arabic.
The Root System
Arabic is a deeply mathematical and logical language based on a root system. Almost every word originates from a three-letter root (Triliteral Root). For example, the root K-T-B revolves around the concept of writing.
Generating Patterns
By plugging these three letters (K-T-B) into specific mathematical patterns (Awzan) defined by Sarf, you can generate dozens of related words without needing a dictionary:
- KaTaBa: He wrote.
- KaaTiB: Writer/Author.
- MaKTooB: Written/Destiny.
- MaKTaB: Desk/Office.
- MaKTaBah: Library.
